Passenger Assistance Training
The passenger assistance training project is focusing on gaps in existing programs and developing material for new technologies to aid in training of airport and airline personnel. Work is being done primarily by our team members at Oregon Health & Science University's Center on Self-Determination.
This project includes: a review of current training programs and practices used by the travel industry, a literature review of best practice training methods, subsequent development of a Passenger Assistance Training Self-Assessment Tool (PATSAT), and the creation of a comprehensive training curriculum. The passenger assistance training curriculum will be based on best practice training standards, provider and passenger focus group data, the Airport and Traveler Surveys, and NCAT biomechanics research.
Several semi-structured focus groups have been conducted with transportation providers. Consumer participants, both those who use interstate transportation and those who do not, are also being recruited. The draft PATSAT has been reviewed and critiqued by a national panel of subject matter experts and is under revision. Training modules are being developed, and project findings and other relevant information will be disseminated at various forums.
