Uwe Rutenberg

Rutenberg Design Inc. and The Velocity Group

Uwe Rutenberg is Chairman of the International Center for Accessible Transportation (ICAT) in Canada, and President of Rutenberg Design Inc., a Canadian firm that has specialized for over 20 years in Research, Design and Development of products and systems for accessible urban and intercity transportation. Uwe has championed for over two decades Universal Design, including the needs of elderly and disabled persons in public transportation. He obtained his Masters Degree in Industrial Design in Germany. Prior to coming to live and work in Canada, Uwe held the positions of Chief Designer, Design Director and University teacher in Germany and Mexico. He has known and worked with Dr. Kate Hunter-Zaworski for many years on several projects.

Uwe has been responsible for the research and development of innovative transportation products and systems for aircraft, terminals, low floor urban buses, over-the-road buses, and trains. His recent research includes boarding technologies for small aircraft, visual communication systems in airports, access to aircraft by people with mobility impairments, and rear-facing wheelchair securement systems in low floor buses. He is an internationally recognized expert for technologies and requirements for mobility and sensory impaired persons.

Uwe Rutenberg has won numerous awards, and is sought as a regular speaker and chair at national and international conferences, workshops and events. He is a member of several professional organizations.
